 Strelitzia    A Presentation on 'Globalisation'.
Bumblebee    Listen to this presentation on globalisation, given by a 16 year old school pupil.
As you listen, look at how the presentation phrases are used (in bold) to give order and structure to the talk.
Use the presentation phrases in this lesson to give your own talk on a subject that interests you - in English of course!    Bumblebee
 Bumblebee   Lecturer:
 Bumblebee   Good morning everyone.
'The world is getting smaller every day'. We hear this type of expression more and more and talk about our planet becoming a 'global village' in which people of different countries and even continents can communicate with each other instantly.    Bumblebee
In this talk, I will outline just a few of the global issues of the new millennium and look at how many of the developments of the late 20th century could have both positive and negative impacts on societies.
Bumblebee   As I mentioned in my introduction, advances in communication and information technology (IT) have perhaps had one of the most profound impacts on today's world. For most of us, this can only be a positive development, but we mustn't forget that not everyone has access to IT. One increasing concern is that the social divide between the 'information rich' and the 'information poor' will increase. Technology such as the Internet also raises ethical debates, for example on censorship and intellectual property rights and of course, improved communications can be put to bad, as well as good use.    Bumblebee
Bumblebee   The second world trend I would like to turn to is connected with the first; that of multi-national corporations and world finance. The role and power of such companies and the dangers of monopolies is being fiercely debated throughout the world. A major challenge to society today is to ensure that the production of such things as computer software and genetic technology is managed fairly for the benefit of all.    Bumblebee
Bumblebee   The third area of rapid evolution I want to highlight is the development in the fields of health care and science. Today, doctors can perform tasks and detect illnesses, which would have seemed miraculous only a few decades ago. People in many countries have an increasingly long life expectancy and quality of life, and world populations are growing rapidly as a result. Yet some areas of the world cannot afford to pay, or do not have access to these developments due to war or poverty, and in these areas people still die of curable diseases.    Bumblebee
Bumblebee   Finally, let me move on to a fourth global issue of our age, which in a way is a consequence of the previous point; that is the damaging effects on our environment. As a planet we have the technology and resources to stop or even reverse the negative effects of pollution and habitat loss. We have made important progress in our understanding and awareness of how our ecosystems operate and the effects we are having on them, but it seems to many people across the globe that we are not able or willing to act fast enough.    Bumblebee
Bumblebee   To conclude, I would like to say that I feel that we are living in exciting and challenging times. The only thing we can be sure of is that the 21st century is likely to provide us with as many questions as it does answers.    Bumblebee   Bumblebee

Comma butterfly    Questions on the lecture.
Answer these 2 questions by choosing one of the 3 options:

 Strelitzia    Conversation: today's children.
Bumblebee     Listen to this brother and sister talking about the future and their children.
Alice: How are Sam and James?
Mark: Oh fine, but you know I was thinking this morning about what kind of world they're growing up in - I do worry sometimes.
Alice: What do you mean? They'll probably have a brilliant life - things are much better than when we were kids. Think of how easy it is now to go globe trotting, and people now have lots more leisure time and flexible working patterns. And what about all the technology stuff - it's amazing!
Mark: I'm glad you're so optimistic.
Alice: Well of course I am! I wish I were a child now - our kids could easily live to be a hundred, fly to Mars, have intelligent computers, great health and a better standard of living than ever!
Mark: Well, maybe if you've got money - but what about all the war, pollution, drugs, violence, things like that. And you know, not all this technology is good - I think it's quite scary! I worry that children these days are so insecure and distracted - they have so much choice and always want things now instead of working for things - but are they any happier? What about moral values?
Alice: Oh Mark, what are you talking about? Remember when you were eight - all those clothes and toys you used to drag Mum and Dad round the shops for? We were just as bad as our lot are now, but we haven't turned out so bad have we?
Mark: Yes, you're right. I think I've forgotten what it's like to be young!    Bumblebee
